Sea in Me, 2022-2023

This body of work is rooted in the rich historical connections between women and the sea. Set in Iceland between 1930 and 1950, the work is inspired by stories of “Sea Women” and their deep ties to lives shaped by maritime culture. The pieces draw on cultural, anthropological, and historical sources, layered with contemporary influence and grounded in questions of gender, identity, equality, the breaking of societal norms, and family relationships. The work unfolds as a semi-autobiographical narrative, reflecting my own experiences of motherhood, kinship, and work ethic, interwoven with seafarer folklore and an enduring, elemental connection to the sea.
